Keep those applications coming in. I'm heading to the beautiful South Island on Wednesday for a few weeks. Really looking forward to spending time with my family. It's been a few years since I've been home. They children will get to run around and breath in the fresh Blenheim air. ( I'm sure my little town gets bigger everytime I'm home ) And I'll get the chance to brainstorm with my mum on some new projects we have in store. I'm sure all of our crafters have had a great break. I see some are back into it already. And many with exciting projects in the works. We look forward to seeing everyone in Feb for our first market. How lucky are we that a month ago yesterday Alice from Absolutely Alice one of our regulars at Crafternoon Tea had her beautiful little man Archer. He has even had one market with us and I'm sure many more to come. What a little darling you are Archer. I look forward to you having a table at CT in the near future.

We also had another of our regulars Bronwyn from People Puppies have her darling little girl Violet who we also got the pleasure of meeting at CT last month for a quick visit ( and I'm sure a market fix for Bronwyn who spent quite a while in hospital ). So two super cute babies to cluck over next time you come for a shop.

Lets hope the weather keeps up for us. My little man turns 7 tomorrow. Wow time goes so fast. I've had a great week getting setup for my next markets and building up my stock for Xmas. On that note applications for Xmas markets close tonight. These two markets on the 3rd and 17th are going to be our biggest yet so make sure you plan a trip down for your Xmas shopping.

On another note I was just flicking through my desk top and I thought I would share a photo. My husband and I before children had a number of houses that we brought back to life. This was one of our favourites. I must confess that our tastes have changed as the children have grown and it's safe to say that we now have LOTS of retro bits and bobs around or house. The odd crochet blanket etc. Daniel was very much a white and stainless person for a long time so it's nice to see some colour in our house.
This house was amazing but boy did it need some work.

It's amazing how you can bring something back to life with a little ( or in this case a lot ) of work and love. I guess when I'm making my toys I kind of feel the same. Bring that old bit of fabric that was sitting in a cupboard back to life so it can be enjoyed and loved all over.

So I had the pleasure of winner this book the other day called Queen of Crafts by Jazz Domino Holly. It arrived in a lovely little parcel from Sew Pretty in Christchurch. Good old facebook introduced me to this prize that just jumped out at me. I would like to think of myself as a crafty queen. So I threw my little parcel in the car and away I went on my daily outing back and forward from school to kindy. So I FINALLY got around to opening it ( ok I confess it didn't take it long it was a prize after all ). What a great little book it is. Her is a little blurb about it.

Handpainted vintage plates at Crafternoon Tea: I don't see any rugby!

Daily distractions for sufferers of World Cup fatigue, from Ally Mullord.

Auckland’s Eden Park is notorious for being the home of the You-Know-What, but just around the corner is something far nicer than rugby: a craft market.

I know that traditionally neither the word ‘craft’ or ‘market’ inspire confidence and the two together are worse, but bear with me - craft markets have come a long way in the last few years.

The markets of my childhood were a mishmash of trestle tables covered in various crap from one or more of the following categories:

Clothing (bits of second-hand polar fleece that could do with a wash)
Decoration (doilies, candles with shells stuck in the sides)
Jewellery (often featuring shells and/or wire)
Food (dodgy jars of preserves with names like “Barbara’s Best Lime Chutney” and “Martin’s Pickle Fiasco”)

But things have changed! It’s 2011 now, and also I don’t live in Blenheim any more.

Crafternoon Tea is my local craft market and it is awesome. It’s in Kingsland and runs on the third Saturday of every month, which is tomorrow (and also the weekend after payday, which makes it particularly dangerous).

I talked to Lisa Madden, who has been running Crafternoon Tea since April, about the “great little market” she looks after - it would have been weird if we talked about something else, and also not very useful for this article.

Ms Madden says Crafternoon Tea is getting bigger and bigger each month, and “this month’s been chaos with emails and phone calls”.

“Last month’s market blew me away… the quality every month is just getting amazing,” she says.

Stallholders apply through Crafternoon Tea’s blog and must provide images of their product before being accepted, to weed out the dodgy-chutney crowd – something Ms Madden says sets the market apart and ensures only the best stallholders are involved.

Ms Madden is qualified to select the best – she has her own stall at the market, selling vintage childrens’ toys, and says she does it “for the love”.

“It’s such a great group of people, the stallholders – it’s a really good little community.

“It’s just really nice watching them all sitting there having a little natter… and getting a chance to showcase their products.”

I become over-excited about the ‘afternoon tea’ section of the name and demand to know if there will be food – I’m reassured that not only will there be cupcakes and a stall from Blackwoods Bakery, Atomic's café is next door for those marketgoers who, like me, are zombified wrecks without their morning coffee.

As well as decorative items, like the hand-painted vintage plates and fabric morepork doorstop my flatmate and I picked up from last month’s market, crafts on show tomorrow will include jewellery, food and childrenswear.

Crafternoon Tea is on tomorrow from 10am to 2pm at the Trinity Methodist Church in Kingsland, on the corner of Sandringham and New North Road. Your local craft market is something you’re going to have to look up yourself.

A day in the life of my sign boy......

Ok so the sign boy is in fact my husband but I just wanted to share what an amazing job he does each month. Rain or shine ( and for the last 3 now 4 months it has rained ) my lovely husband load's the car
the monday before Crafternoon-Tea with the nearly 40 sign's we have. Cable tie in hand off he goes on his merry ( sometimes no so ) way. "See you darling have fun." hehe

So today I thought maybe I should go as I needed to check a few things at the hall. eg are the heaters in fact working this month or not. We left at 11am this morning. Give or take a few hours to stop and do the odd job it takes AGES....and I luff him for it. I get the lucky job of taking them down on the sundays so we do share the work. And today to our joy ( as well as the car load of sick children home from school ) we had just a little bit of snow. Yes nothing like the lower part I know but fun anyway. So next time you see my darling husband helping out just remember what he does each month for the love of it because it does take him a good two hours driving around and getting those awesome signs up. Thanks darlin ( you can call him Dan ) Lisa

He brought me home this beautiful retro nutrimetics case yesterday which I have already loaded with my little stash of vintage fabrics. Also a cute little wooden dish. I really do like it. It's amazing how different something can look once you take it away from the op shop and into your home. Good work hubby : )

Her approach to cake making is unique and she gets her inspiration from almost anywhere; a movie, a historical event,a book,the stylish era of the 1920ties/30 & 1950ties,fabrics...the soft touch of silk or rich sumptuous velvet...too many too list here..the whole world is sooo inspiring! "My cakes are "staged" and I have or make up a story to go with them..Life is a stage and we might as well celebrate, right? "

Her cakes are mainly for "Grown Ups" (no Dora the Explorer stuff in her repertoire..) Nicole is well known for her unusual and sometimes daring flavour combinations & decorations. She likes to push the culinary boundaries a bit and certainly provide something "different" for the discerning & adventurous taste palette.

Poppy&Bee is the home of crochet goodies for every member of the family. Natalie started her business by accident, after mucking around with finger puppets and miniature purses over summer, and finding a lot of requests coming in for custom made crochet goodies decided that it might be time to set up a TradeMe account. Fast forward six months, add in a website, blog, a feature in Little Treasures Magazine, three monthly markets and a Facebook Store and Poppy&Bee is fast becoming the go-to name for high quality, New Zealand yarn crochet hats and scarves.

“Luckily I had a lot of nice friends who wanted to indulge my crochet addiction, and I just kept on going from there”.

It’s so satisfying seeing someone wear that yarn for the first time and be so happy and warm!”

Poppy&Bee is named for Natalie’s two children – “It was around midnight and I thought, right – if I’m doing this I’d better get a name, and to make sure I didn’t chicken out I started a blog at the same time – so it became ‘real’ about 1am one summer morning. The bad sleeping habits haven’t changed though, although I can’t crochet anything requiring complicated counting after about 10pm!

Natalie has also started a network for other work at home parents in Auckland, after seeing a need for a space for fellow artists and crafters who work from home in their own small businesses to catch up and share ideas and good coffee once a month. You can find out more about this here.

Introducing Saskia.n design's

Saskia was first introduced to resin at Art School in 2005. In 2010 she decided to make a few resin pieces to go with an exhibition and things grew from there.

Her first works were simple solid resin pieces featuring images from her own work and later expanded into stamps and coins. The more she made, the more she explored new ideas.

She further expanded her range of stamps, imagery and materials by introducing bezel settings and other exciting findings.

She started to refine the work she was making and decided to “Brand” it. She went with a simple name saskia.n Designs, which is solely dedicated to my Resin Jewellery.

Saskia now makes a wide variety of jewellery items using just about anything she can stick in resin. The range has expanded from what were originally pendants and brooches to rings, earrings and even the occasional set of cufflinks.

Saskia moved back to Auckland in January and has started going to markets over the last few months. " It is a new and exciting venture, and a great way to meet new people. It is really interesting to hear what people like, or want, and take on new suggestions and ideas."

Her work is inspired by nostalgia and a love of paper. She loves bringing life to old stamps and coins by immortalising them in resin

Introducing Amy's button Jewellery

Amy started making button necklaces in 2007. "There are so many beautiful old buttons that aren't being used, and I like to give them a new life, and show them off a bit. A lot of people have very fond memories of buttons, and at markets I constantly get people telling me about how they used to play with nana's button tin."

She uses a mixture of new and vintage buttons strung onto strong waxed cord to create her necklaces, which are all one-offs. One of her favourite things about making the necklaces is coming up with fun new colour combinations. She has a lot of repeat customers who always tell her they get heaps of comments when they wear one of her pieces.

She also sell a range of button rings, earrings, hairclips and brooches made from both new and vintage buttons. They're affordable and make excellent gifts.

Amy loves selling her jewellery at markets. "It's great fun, and I do it as much as possible. Crafternoon Tea has really great vibes, and it's always exciting to see what the other crafty regulars have been making! "

"Besides making my button jewellery, I teach children's art classes, work in a gallery and volunteer at art events. My main passions are drawing and painting, and I have just finished a degree in visual art."

Stall holders emailed and we are good to go. We have some really yummy food stalls this month. You can do all of your weekend shopping. Grab some fresh bread and some yummy cheese to go with it. Then for desert why not have some licorice and a cupcake. Then wander around our beautiful stalls for some jewellery, hand painted plates, books, soft toys, vintage items, crochet and sooooo much more. I can't wait.

What a great day it was yesterday. The weather held out and we had some amazing stall holders.

Saturday will be the day. I love the market. The stall holders are always so friendly, I love watching them all chat with their customers and work on their crafts. It looks like the weather is going to clear as well.

Welcome one of our regulars at Crafternoon Tea Hana Park from Bakadesign.

How did it all start Hana??

It all really began with 3^rd year Typography class when I was a design student at Massey University. The project was designing a book with-in the contents and we went class trip to small local bindery. I was so amazed that the book can be made with any materials and made by human hands. I started make dozens of different books every week and I took a bookbinding class to make sure and I was hooked. And Finally I have my Masters degree in Book arts.

So what do you have to offer for your customers??

I make all sorts of books: diaries, notebooks, journals, occasional books, wedding guestbooks, photoalbums and cute crochet monkey. Everything is lovingly handmade by me.

Hana is constantly looking for new approaches to her work and what customer needs for every day life. Sometimes designs are inspired by people she know's – they start out as a present for someone in particular, and then end up on my market -

Hana really enjoys going out to the markets. "I always say to my mum, market's are so addictive. I love meeting with customers and hear about the comments, meeting other creative friends and shopping for other handmade goodies."

"I make my books with blessing and I hope that my books will give blessing to all."

Niki Gribble aka Odd One Out, describes herself as a maker of stuff, collector of everything and rescuer of the unused and unloved.

Odd One Out pieces are all hand made by Nikki and are crafted from predominately recycled materials. Her range is ever expanding but at the moment includes:

– Vintage plates upcycled with quirky hand painted illustrations
- Kitsch photographs in revamped ornate frames
- Cute recycled lampshades re- covered in vintage wool blankets
– Cushions made with vintage fabrics

– re-invented jewellery using vintage and found pieces

She tells us she is really inspired by working with vintage and salvaged materials. "It’s my little way of extending the life of perfectly a good object that may have otherwise been dumped. My aim is to imbue a sense of humor and a designers eye into making those unloved objects stick around for a bit longer. "

Hello everyone, what a great day we had on Saturday. Thank you to everyone for being so friendly. It was a little on the quiet side but still an enjoyable day. Well, exciting news: the Kingsland Business Society have asked us to hold our market on the day of their festival. So our next market will run a week early on the 9th of April 2 - 6pm . The Festival will have live music, a kids zone and much more. Get in quick and apply we have already had a huge response for this market. It should be a great day. The festival will run 3 - 9pm so lots of time after the markets ends to enjoy the event. Lisa :)

The Great Crafternoon Tea Christmas Market!!

Thanks to everyone who came down to help celebrate Crafternoon Tea's first birthday, it was a great success!

After a lot of thought and discussion with my family, friends and wonderful crafty friends, I have decided to keep Crafternoon Tea up and running! Yay! However, the markets will be every second month at the moment, with special event markets taking place to coincide with the Rugby World Cup Eden Park matches (think of those people and tourists in Kingsland!) and the wonderful Kingsland Festival. I'll put up a new calendar with market dates, once they have been confirmed.

On another note, we are not having a November market, but preparations are underway for our fantastic Christmas market! Applications for this market will be open shortly, so keep an eye out and make sure you don't miss this event!

It's competition time! Have you got fantastic, creative design skills? Interested in having a free stall, in a prime position at our Christmas market? I need someone to design the Crafternoon Tea Christmas flyer. The flyer will need to have:

Crafternoon Tea's birthday!

Oh my! It's our first birthday already!!! Where did that year go? It really does seem like almost yesterday that I had this crazy idea to start up my very own craft market, little did I know that it would be such a great success!

I am very sad to see it go, so I might not! After talking to lots of people, friends and family, it turns out that there's a lot of support for Crafternoon Tea, who knew?? :) But, what I might do is change it into a bi-monthly market. So have it every two months instead of every month, it might just make it that bit more manageable and allow Crafternoon Tea to stay alive! What do you think?

This means that there would be no November market, but there would be the obligatory Christmas market, plus we could have special markets to coincide with special events, like the Kingsland Fair!

So perhaps a bit of good news!

Come on down to the market tomorrow, do a spot of early Christmas shopping (did I really say that??) and check out what's new!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!

Have you seen our new terms and conditions?
We've been meaning to put these together for a while, and now they're here! It's really important that you read these, and part of our application process now requests that you do so. They answer loads of questions about things like parking, expectations, tables, costs and much, much more! Even if you're thinking about applying, these T's and C's might answer some of your questions.
Just click on the link to your right to find out more.

We've also changed things around slightly with our application dates, deadlines and payments (another important reason to read the T&C's!). This month will be a one off month where you have slightly less time than usual to apply, but in future months you will have nearly 30 days to apply and pay. However, for the month of June, applications close on the 6th of June, confirmation emails will be sent out on the 7th of June, you will then have until 14th June to confirm your place and pay.

So, what are you waiting for? Read those terms and apply!! Don't forget that Crafternoon Tea is now open to suppliers as well as makers.
